Project of exploitation of the Canino DOP extra virgin organic olive oil through the study of the CO2 flux in the olive grove ecosystem.

The project was realized with the Measure 124 tender of the RDP of the Lazio Region by Frantoio Gentili srl (Farnese, VT) in collaboration with Terrasystem and Tuscia University - DIBAF.
The project's objectives were:
- To develop a system for calculating, monitoring and communication of the impact of the production of olive oil in terms of greenhouse gas emissions (: the carbon footprint)
- To assess the kind of attitude and the level of consumer interest in the Upper Tuscia olive oils produced through an environmentally friendly process in terms of greenhouse gas emissions
- Test the ability to directly measure in the field of carbon dioxide exchanges in an olive grove dedicated to the production of oil
The project led to the development of methodologies for estimating carbon footprint (based on LCA - Life Cycle Assessment and Measurement of CO2 streams with eddy covariance technique) and for product traceability, and communication / marketing tools based on QR-CODE and the Internet, applicable to the olive industry. These tools have been implemented and made available in the web platform www.carboncheck.it. This system has been inserted into the catalogue of innovations of the Lazio Region.
